30 June 2014 – PUB, the national water agency, announced today plans to lay a new trunk water pipeline from the Murnane Service Reservoir, located in central Singapore, to meet future water demand in the city area.

2. In preparing its plans for the new Murnane pipeline, PUB has conducted detailed feasibility studies on various options to lay this new underground water pipeline. About half of the 22 km pipeline will be laid underneath the lower half of the Rail Corridor. After the pipeline has been laid, the surface of this stretch will be maintained as a contiguous green space for public recreational use.

3. PUB will call tenders for a detailed engineering design and an environmental impact study in Jul 2014. The environmental impact study will recommend mitigation measures to minimise the impact of construction works to the environment. PUB will begin by carrying out soil investigation at some localised sites.

4. Construction work for the Murnane pipeline is expected to start in 2016 and complete by 2019.

5. For the safety of the public, PUB will close off the stretch of Rail Corridor south of Holland Road from first half of 2016 as the pipeline is being laid. PUB will take appropriate measures such as hoarding of the work sites and provision of alternative access to minimise disruption to pedestrians and road users. These areas will be progressively re-opened in sections after the pipeline has been laid and the ground has been reinstated, so that it will be available for recreational uses such as jogging and cycling.

6. PUB and the Urban Redevelopment Authority have discussed with relevant stakeholders and interest groups on how this project can be planned and implemented sensitively with minimal impact and disruption to the surrounding environment.

7. “We will work with various community members such as residents of nearby premises, rail corridor users and relevant interest groups at different stages of the project – from planning to construction – to ensure that this project, while ensuring water supply for the city area in the long term, will minimise any inconvenience to the community. After the pipeline has been laid, the surface of this stretch will be maintained as a contiguous green space for public recreational use,” said Mr Chew Men Leong, Chief Executive, PUB.

8. This project underscores the Government’s commitment to secure water supply for the city area for the future. It also enhances environmental sustainability to ensure a high quality living environment for Singaporeans by making good use of underground spaces.
